About Hildegarde Withers
Hildegarde Withers is Stuart Palmer schoolteacher detective from 1931 novels, filmed by RKO six times in the 1930s with Edna May Oliver leading the first three. Penguin Pool Murder opened in December 1932, Murder on the Blackboard and Murder on a Honeymoon followed, then Murder on a Bridle Path, Plot Thickens, and Forty Naughty Girls closed in 1937 with Helen Broderick and Zasu Pitts stepping in.
Each film gives Withers a fresh murder with Inspector Piper beside her and no arc across entries. Watch them in RKO release order for the Oliver to Broderick to Pitts relay as audiences saw it, since the handoffs happen in sequence.
Good to know
There is no separate chronological order worth listing. The six RKO films from 1932 to 1937 are standalone schoolteacher cases with recast leads from Oliver to Broderick to Pitts, so release order and story order are the same list. Later TV pilot with Eve Arden sits outside the RKO run and can be skipped safely.
