About Philip Marlowe

Philip Marlowe is Raymond Chandler Los Angeles private eye from The Big Sleep in 1939, filmed many times with many faces. Dick Powell originated him in Murder My Sweet in 1944 from Farewell My Lovely, Bogart defined him in The Big Sleep in 1946, Montgomery directed himself in Lady in the Lake in 1947, and George Montgomery took The High Window as The Brasher Doubloon the same year.

Later versions include James Garner in Marlowe in 1969, Elliott Gould in The Long Goodbye in 1973, Robert Mitchum twice in 1975 and 1978, James Caan in Poodle Springs in 1998, and Liam Neeson in Marlowe in 2022. The films retell novels independently, so release order shows changing Los Angeles styles best.

Good to know

There is no separate chronological order worth listing. The ten films from 1944 to 2022 are separate adaptations with no shared timeline, so release order and story order are the same list. The Falcon Takes Over from 1942 uses a Chandler plot with Falcon instead of Marlowe and sits outside this Marlowe list.
