About Cyborg 009
Cyborg 009 follows Joe Shimamura and eight others turned into cyborgs by Black Ghost, who rebel and fight for humanity. The 1966 film and 1968 series start the run, while the 1979 color series with 50 episodes became the classic version for many fans.
Later branches retell the same origin with new craft, from the 1980 Legend of the Super Galaxy film to the 2001 Cyborg Soldier series, the 2012 Re Cyborg film and the 2016 Call of Justice trilogy. Watch in release order. Each branch adapts Ishinomori manga on its own, so release order tracks animation history without a single timeline to protect.
Good to know
Release order works as animation history, because every branch restarts Joe and the team rather than continuing the last one. The 1979 series and 2001 Soldier series are the two fullest entry points, with the 1960s films as origins and the 2010s films as modern takes. The manga ran from 1964 unfinished at Ishinomori passing. No new anime has been dated, so the released run is complete.
