About Aura Battler Dunbine
Aura Battler Dunbine (1983 to 1984) runs 49 episodes of Tomino isekai before the word existed: Sho Zama is summoned to Byston Well's insect-mecha wars and the conflict escalates onto Earth itself. The New Story OVA (1988) jumps centuries ahead for a three-episode sequel.
Broadcast order is the guide; the OVA assumes the series' world and its apocalyptic ending. The show's escalation from fantasy skirmishes to Tokyo battles is the trajectory to savor. The 49-episode run completes Sho's story, while the OVA starts a new one. The insect-mecha designs remain unlike anything else in the genre.
Good to know
The series finale is famously bleak even by Tomino standards: go in prepared. The OVA's time jump means a mostly new cast, so treat it as an epilogue era rather than a continuation. Streaming availability is patchy outside Japan. No continuation has followed since 1988, so the TV run plus OVA is the set. The designs influenced decades of bio-mecha that followed.
