About Animals
HBO aired Animals from 2016 to 2018 with Duplass brothers producing, following rats, pigeons and roaches living crude small lives in human New York. Early episodes pair one vermin crew with one human sketch, from Phil the mouse mayor plots to the pigeon gang. The middle stretch deepens the borough crews with hookup apps, landlord scams and protest rants told from gutter height.
The closing run in 2018 pushes the city toward collapse as the human cutaways grow darker, ending after 30 episodes. Creators Phil Matarese and Mike Luciano voiced most leads across all three years. Watch season one, then two, then three in release order, since crew fates and the city decay carry straight through.
Good to know
Watch the three seasons in release order, since crew fates and the running city decay land best in sequence even though sketches stand alone. The human cutaways sharpen each year, so the 2018 close reads bleakest after the early grime. No revival or special connects to the run, making the 30 episodes fully closed. Track the rat and pigeon crews closely because their arcs anchor the satire.
