About Dinosaur Train

Dinosaur Train (2009) is the PBS show with the catchiest premise in preschool TV: Buddy the T-Rex, adopted into a Pteranodon family, rides a time-traveling train to meet a different species almost every episode. Five seasons and 100 episodes ran through 2020, each built around a real dinosaur fact.

Air order is the whole guide, since episodes are standalone apart from Buddy learning the ropes early on. The 2021 film Adventure Island sends the family to a new island of giant dinosaurs and works as the finale. Dr. Scott's live-action segments date the show charmingly but carry the actual paleontology, so they are worth not skipping.

Good to know

Later seasons add the Big Pond and Mesozoic atolls to the map, but the format never changes, so viewers can sample freely after the first dozen episodes. The film assumes familiarity with the Conductor and the time tunnels, which is why it goes last. No new episodes have been announced since the fifth season, so the series plus the film is the complete set for now.
