About Heathcliff
Heathcliff began as George Gately's comic strip before Ruby-Spears animated 26 episodes in 1980 around the Nutmeg romance. DiC's 1984 series ran 86 episodes across two seasons pairing Heathcliff segments with the Catillac Cats gang of Riff-Raff, Hector, Wordsworth, Mungo and Cleo. Heathcliff: The Movie (1986) compiles TV episodes into a theater outing.
Each version resets the neighborhood and the voices with no shared timeline, so the Ruby-Spears and DiC runs stand apart for their own audiences. No revival has been ordered beyond the strip's continued run in papers, leaving the alley closed on screen.
Good to know
Start with the 1984 DiC series for the fuller run with the Catillac Cats included, then the 1980 series as the shorter classic take. The 1986 movie compiles existing episodes rather than telling a new story, safe as a sampler after either series. Later reruns and the French reboot talk never became required viewing for the alley.
