About Civilization
Civilization has players grow one city to a world power from 4000 BC to space. The 1991 original plus Civ II in 1996 set despotism to democracy climbs, Civ III in 2001 adds culture borders, Civ IV in 2005 adds religion and great people, Civ V in 2010 moves to hexes with no unit stacks, and Civ VI in 2016 spreads cities across districts.
Civilization VII from 2025 splits campaigns into ages with civ switching between them. Entries stand alone with no story order to follow. New players often start with V with expansions, VI with expansions, or VII for current matchmaking, since older AI and UI feel spare now.
Good to know
Release order shows systems grow from stacks to districts to ages, but start with the newest complete edition you own. Civ V Brave New World remains the cleanest single loop, Civ VI Gathering Storm runs widest with climate, and VII plays fastest with age breaks. Expansions belong with their base game rather than apart. Treat VII as the current line with DLC still arriving.
