About King's Field

King's Field is FromSoftware's first game series, a slow first person dungeon crawler that started as a 1994 PlayStation launch title in Japan. King's Field II followed July 21, 1995 and released in the West as King's Field, then King's Field III arrived June 21, 1996. King's Field IV came October 4, 2001 on PlayStation 2 as The Ancient City.

The PSP got Additional I and II in 2006. The numbering confuses new players because the Japanese II became the Western I. Play the Western II and III order for the classic trilogy, then IV for the faster combat that led to Demon's Souls.

Good to know

Release order matches the design evolution, so there is no separate timeline to follow. The 1994 original stayed in Japan until fan translations and reissues, so most players start with the 1995 game sold as King's Field in the West. Expect slow movement, no map handholding and cryptic NPC hints. Mobile entries from 2004 are lost media after servers closed, so the four main games plus the PSP pair are the full playable set.
