About Baldur's Gate
Baldur's Gate began with BioWare's Baldur's Gate (1998) and its Tales of the Sword Coast expansion (1999) about the Bhaalspawn Gorion's Ward. Shadows of Amn (2000) with Throne of Bhaal (2001) closed that saga against Jon Irenicus. Siege of Dragonspear (2016) from Beamdog bridged the gap years later.
Baldur's Gate 3 (2023) from Larian Studios moved a century forward with Tav, Shadowheart, Astarion and the tadpole plot, winning Game of the Year and selling past 15 million copies. Larian confirmed no DLC with Hasbro moving the series to new studios, so the next game has no date.
Good to know
Play in release order if tackling the classics, but starting with Baldur's Gate 3 works fine since its century gap resets the cast. The Bhaalspawn saga assumes its own party across both BioWare games, so keep the same character through 1 and 2. Siege of Dragonspear fits between the sagas yet divides fans, safe to play after the classics rather than between them.
