About Octopath Traveler
Octopath Traveler (2018) revived classic JRPG structure with HD-2D style: eight travelers with separate stories, break-and-boost combat, and path actions for every NPC. Champions of the Continent (2020) retells the formula as a mobile prequel, and Octopath Traveler II (2023) runs eight new stories in a fresh setting.
Each game stands alone, so start with either numbered entry: the original for the formula, the sequel for the refinements. Release order shows the job systems and day-night mechanics evolving. The stories connect only through shared-world references, never plot. Team Asano's Bravely Default DNA shows in every break gauge.
Good to know
Champions of the Continent is free-to-start with gacha systems, so mainline fans can treat it as optional lore. The sequel's crossed-paths chapters answer the original's biggest criticism about party members never interacting. Both numbered games run 60-plus hours with all stories finished. No third mainline game had been announced at the last check, though the HD-2D line continues elsewhere.
