About Persona
Persona 3, 4 and 5 are the spine of the series, and each one stands alone: a calendar year, friends who can manifest Personas, and a threat only that group can end. There is no plot handoff between them, so any of the three works as a first game.
What does carry over is texture. Persona 4 nods back to Persona 3, Persona 5 hides references to both, and later spin-offs treat the earlier casts as established history.
The spin-offs are sequels in all but name: Strikers and Tactica continue Persona 5's cast, Arena Ultimax continues Persona 4's, and Persona 5: The Phantom X is a free-to-play side story running alongside Persona 5.
Good to know
Play the versions named below: Persona 3 Reload, Persona 4 Golden and Persona 5 Royal. Reload leaves out the FES epilogue, which ships separately as the Episode Aigis DLC. Persona and the Persona 2 duology are an earlier, separate continuity and are safe to skip. Persona 4 Revival is dated for February 18, 2027, with the Switch 2 version on May 20, 2027; Persona 6 was announced in June 2026 with no date.
