About Beverly Hills Cop
Eddie Murphy plays Axel Foley, a Detroit detective whose cases keep dragging him to Beverly Hills. Martin Brest directed the 1984 original, the highest-grossing US release of that year with an Oscar-nominated screenplay. Tony Scott directed Beverly Hills Cop II (1987), and John Landis directed Beverly Hills Cop III (1994), a sequel even Murphy later called atrocious.
Thirty years later, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F arrived on Netflix on July 3, 2024. Mark Molloy directed, with Murphy reuniting with Judge Reinhold, John Ashton, Paul Reiser, and Bronson Pinchot, plus Taylour Paige as Foley's daughter and Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Kevin Bacon in new roles. Release order is story order. Netflix's 2019 license from Paramount included an option for another sequel, but no fifth film had been announced as of September 2026.
Good to know
Axel F is a streaming-only entry; it skipped theaters for Netflix. Paramount licensed the fourth film to Netflix in 2019 with an option for a sequel, and that option remains the only concrete path to a fifth film. Murphy's public sequel talk since has centered on Shrek 5 and a Donkey spinoff, not Axel Foley.
