About Gremlins
Joe Dante's Gremlins (1984) sets the rules in Kingston Falls: keep Gizmo dry, out of bright light, and never feed him after midnight. Gremlins 2: The New Batch (1990) moves Billy, Kate, and Gizmo to a New York skyscraper for a looser, joke-packed sequel. Both star Zach Galligan and Phoebe Cates.
Secrets of the Mogwai (2023) is an animated prequel set in 1920s Shanghai, following 10-year-old Sam Wing, the future shopkeeper Mr. Wing, as he meets Gizmo. Watch it after the films even though it happens first; it was made for viewers who already know the rules.
Good to know
The series is a prequel, so strict chronology would put it first, but release order is recommended since its payoffs assume the films. Gremlins 3 is dated November 19, 2027, with Chris Columbus directing and Steven Spielberg executive producing; it will be the first film in the series since 1990. Columbus has said he wants practical puppets with minimal CGI, though effects plans are not final.
