Release order, with group labels showing which timeline branch each film belongs to.

Original films

  1. 1 Halloween 1978 · movie Carpenter's original. Introduces Laurie Strode and Michael Myers. Start here.
  2. 2 Halloween II 1981 · movie Picks up the same night. Later branches keep or drop it, so it matters.

Standalone detour

  1. 3 Halloween III: Season of the Witch 1982 · movie No Michael Myers. A standalone anthology try about killer masks. Skippable for the Myers story.

Thorn timeline

  1. 4 Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers 1988 · movie Follows films 1-2. Laurie is said to have died; her daughter Jamie takes over.
  2. 5 Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers 1989 · movie Direct continuation of part 4 with the Cult of Thorn thread.
  3. 6 Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers 1995 · movie Ends the Thorn arc. A Producer's Cut exists, but the theatrical version is the standard entry.

H20 timeline

  1. 7 Halloween H20: 20 Years Later 1998 · movie Keeps only films 1-2 and drops 4-6. Laurie is alive, living under a new name.
  2. 8 Halloween: Resurrection 2002 · movie Direct sequel to H20. Ends that branch.

Zombie remake timeline

  1. 9 Halloween 2007 · movie Rob Zombie's reboot. New continuity, no link to earlier films.
  2. 10 Halloween II 2009 · movie Continues Zombie's continuity only.

Blumhouse timeline

  1. 11 Halloween 2018 · movie Follows only the 1978 film and drops everything else, including the sibling link.
  2. 12 Halloween Kills 2021 · movie Same night continuation of the 2018 film.
  3. 13 Halloween Ends 2022 · movie Closes the Blumhouse trilogy and the Laurie-Michael arc. Latest released entry.

About Halloween

Thirteen Halloween films were released between 1978 and 2022, but they do not form one story. John Carpenter's original splits into separate branches: the Thorn run (4-6), the H20 run, Rob Zombie's two-film remake run, and Blumhouse's trilogy that follows only the 1978 film. Halloween III has no Michael Myers at all.

Release order is the recommended path. It shows how each branch started, and the group labels mark exactly which earlier films each branch keeps. Do not watch them as one straight chronology, because later branches erase each other.

Good to know

Halloween Ends (2022) is the latest released entry. Miramax's TV deal with Trancas (2023) stalled, and June 2026 reports say the series was shelved in favor of a reboot film possibly eyed for the 50th anniversary in 2028. That film is rumor only, with no cast, director or date confirmed as of this check.
