About Happy Death Day
Happy Death Day traps Tree Gelbman, played by Jessica Rothe, in a birthday murder loop until she finds the baby mask killer. The 2017 original earned about 123 million worldwide for Blumhouse. 2U from February 2019 shifts to sci-fi as Ryan's reactor pulls Tree into a parallel loop to save her friends.
Christopher Landon wrote and directed both with Israel Broussard as Carter. A third film with working title Happy Death Day to Us is in development with no date. Watch in release order since the second assumes the first loop's rules and relationships.
Good to know
Watch the 2017 film before 2U, since the sequel reuses the loop mechanics and flips them into science directly. Both films run under two hours with the same campus cast throughout. Tree's growth only reads in sequence across both loops. The third film stays yearless in development, so 2U is the current endpoint.
