About Mamma Mia
Mamma Mia follows Sophie Sheridan on a Greek island as she invites three of her mother Donna's old flames to her wedding, hoping one is her father. The story runs on ABBA songs, with the first film covering the wedding and the sequel cutting between young Donna in 1979 and Sophie reopening the hotel years later.
The sequel is the one that confuses people, since half of it is a prequel. The fix is simple: watch in release order. The 1979 scenes land harder once you know the older versions of each character, which only the first film gives you.
Good to know
Here We Go Again jumps between 1979 and the present, so it works as both sequel and prequel. Watch it second and the skipping pays off: young Donna scenes explain every present day choice. A third film has a finished script and public backing from the cast, but no greenlight or date, so this list stays at two for now.
