About Merton Park

Between 1960 and 1965 Merton Park Studios made a run of Edgar Wallace crime second features for Anglo Amalgamated, shot in weeks on tiny budgets. Each runs about an hour, with contemporary suits and offices replacing the period settings of the Wallace novels. Familiar faces like Bernard Lee cycle through blackmail plots, heists and murder frames under directors including Montgomery Tully and Robert Tronson.

Ten of the films played the Rank circuit while most supported ABC bills, and the run later filled American television as The Edgar Wallace Mystery Theatre. The Malpas Mystery was farmed out to Independent Artists at Beaconsfield while the rest came from Merton Park under Jack Greenwood. Watch all forty seven in release order for the full Brit noir education.

Good to know

Urge to Kill from March 1960 is sometimes listed first but was not made as part of the Merton Park run, so this guide starts with Clue of the Twisted Candle and counts forty seven films. Crossroads to Crime and Seven Keys were later folded into television packages but were not shot for the series either. The run ended with Dead Man's Chest in October 1965. Years follow Wikipedia release months, spot checked against BFI and CTVA listings.
