About The Muppets
The Muppets began as a variety show and moved into films with The Muppet Movie, a road-trip origin story that introduces Kermit, Piggy, Fozzie and Gonzo. The next two films keep the troupe in original comic adventures, while Christmas Carol and Treasure Island drop the same cast into literary adaptations.
Later entries split the same way. The 2011 film and Muppets Most Wanted return to original stories, and the Disney+ specials and series are standalone reunions. Start with the 1979 origin, then follow release order and treat the literary films as optional detours.
Good to know
Most Muppet stories stand alone, so release order works without any reordering. The Muppet Christmas Carol and Muppet Treasure Island sit outside continuity and can be watched any time or skipped. Kermit’s Swamp Years is a childhood prequel for completists only. No new Muppet film or series is dated after the February 2026 special.
