About Na Hong-jin
Na Hong-jin makes chase films that turn into something darker. The Chaser from 2008 follows a pimp hunting a missing call girl across Seoul in one night. The Yellow Sea from 2010 sends a taxi driver from Yanbian into a gang contract in Korea that falls apart. The Wailing from 2016 starts as a village sickness story and grows into an occult standoff.
Hope from 2026 is his first film in ten years and his first science fiction work. Set in a harbor town near the DMZ, it follows a police chief tracking a reported tiger that proves to be something else. It premiered at Cannes in May 2026 and opened in Korea on July 15.
Good to know
Watch in release order. The Yellow Sea exists in two cuts, theatrical and director, with about thirty minutes difference, either works for story. The Wailing runs over two and a half hours and its ending stays disputed, which is intentional. Hope is the most expensive Korean production to date and got a reedit after Cannes, so the theatrical cut is the one to seek. The Medium from 2021 was written and produced by Na, not directed, so it sits outside this list.
