About Red Riding
Red Riding adapts David Peace's Yorkshire crime novels as three linked TV films, all premiered on Channel 4 in March 2009. 1974 follows rookie Eddie Dunford probing missing girls amid property deals. 1980 tracks detective Peter Hunter reviewing the Ripper inquiry while the force blocks him.
1983 closes with solicitor John Piggott and policeman Maurice Jobson facing the past. Directors Julian Jarrold, James Marsh and Anand Tucker each shoot a different grain and palette for their year. The trilogy runs about five hours total and ends with no threads left for a fourth part.
Good to know
Watch 1974 then 1980 then 1983, since the same officers and killers recur with new guilt each time. The 1980 film spoils the 1974 killer outright, so swapping ruins the first mystery. Violence against women and police corruption stay central throughout, with no softened cut available. Treat the three as one closed novel split for television.
