About Ring
Ring follows a cursed videotape that kills viewers in seven days, starting with Hideo Nakata's 1998 Ringu. The Japanese run splits after the original, with Spiral continuing one branch and Ring 2 starting another, while later films like Sadako 3D, Sadako and Sadako DX each pick a different thread.
New viewers should watch the core Nakata run first: Ringu, Spiral or Ring 2, then Ring 0 as a prequel, then the later Sadako films in release order. The American remakes and the Korean remake retell the same curse on their own, so they sit outside the Japanese order and can be watched separately.
Good to know
The branches are the whole confusion, because Spiral and Ring 2 both claim to follow Ringu and ignore each other. Ring 0 is a prequel about Sadako's past and plays best after the first two films rather than first. Sadako vs Kayako crosses into Ju-on and stands alone. Stick to release order for the Japanese films and the splits stay manageable.
