About Tales from the Crypt
Tales from the Crypt spans two eras: the Amicus films (Tales from the Crypt 1972, The Vault of Horror 1973) with their portmanteau shocks, and HBO's series (1989 to 1996) with the Crypt Keeper hosting seven seasons of star-studded horror. Demon Knight (1995) and Bordello of Blood (1996) extend the HBO run theatrically.
Watch the Amicus pair first as history, then the HBO series, then the two films as finales: the show's continuity is loose but its tone builds. The series episodes stand alone, so sampling the famous ones (And All Through the House, The Man Who Was Death) works. Ritual (2002) dropped the branding in most regions and is skippable.
Good to know
The HBO series' nude-and-gore freedom defined its identity against the Amicus restraint: both work on their own terms. Demon Knight plays as an extended episode and the best film of the set; Bordello is the weak farewell. Revivals have been announced and stalled repeatedly, most recently in the 2010s, so the 1990s ending stands. The comics continue the brand for devotees.
