About Gunsmoke
Gunsmoke follows Marshal Matt Dillon with Kitty, Doc and Chester in Dodge City. Seasons 1 to 6 run half hour from 1955 in black and white. Seasons 7 to 11 stretch to hour shows with Chester leaving and Festus joining.
Seasons 12 to 20 run in color through 1975 with Newly and Burke late. Five TV films aired from 1987 to 1994 closing Dillon and Kitty. The episodes never need strict links, so release order walks Dodge from radio roots to color end. The theme and draw open every show while Dillon keeps the street.
Good to know
Watch seasons 1 through 20 in air order since the deputies change over time. Chester leaves early and Festus carries the middle years well. Kitty stays through the series run proper. The TV films sit last as reunion tales. The run is closed after 1975 with no further order needed at all. The twenty year run confirms the peak, so start at season one.
