About Rebus

Rebus is Ian Rankin Edinburgh detective from 1987 novels, filmed three times. STV made four features in 2000 to 2001 with John Hannah as Rebus, then BBC made ten episodes from 2006 to 2007 with Ken Stott across two series. BBC returned in May 2024 with Richard Rankin for six episodes as younger Rebus, renewed onward.

The three runs adapt different books with no shared continuity. New viewers can start with Stott for the classic run or Rankin for the current one. Release order shows changing Edinburgh styles best if watching all.

Good to know

There is no single chronological order across versions since each restarts Rebus separately in Edinburgh time. Within each run release order is story order, so the guide lists runs in the sequence they aired from 2000 onward. The Rankin BBC run from May 2024 is ongoing and the only one still adding cases.
