About Akagi

Akagi adapts Nobuyuki Fukumoto's mahjong manga about 13-year-old Shigeru beating yakuza for Nangou. Two V-Cinema films arrived in 1995 and 1997 directed by Kenzo Maihara. The Madhouse anime ran 26 episodes from October 5, 2005 to March 29, 2006 on NTV covering the Washizu marathon.

Live dramas followed with Akagi in 2015 and Akagi: Washizu-hen plus Ryuzaki-hen in 2017. No new anime has been announced. The manga ran 1991 to 2018, so all screen versions adapt only the early legend. The 2005 anime remains the fullest take.

Good to know

Anime first gives the complete psychological run, since the 26 episodes stay on one long match. The 1990s films are short alternates with different actors and can be watched after. The 2015 to 2017 dramas retell Washizu with modern pacing and sit last. There is no chronological split to manage, so release order within each medium is enough.
