About Clannad
Clannad follows delinquent Tomoya thawing through Nagisa's theater dreams across twenty-three episodes from 2007 at Kyoto Animation, with the Tomoyo OVA as an alternate-universe extra. The 2007 Toei film condenses the same arc non-canonically and can be skipped.
After Story from 2008 runs twenty-four episodes through marriage, loss and Ushio with the Kyou OVA as its own alternate extra. The two TV runs form one complete Key tragedy in release order. Watch the series first, then After Story, taking each OVA with its season.
Good to know
The Toei film is a non-canon compression for completists only and sits outside TV continuity. Both TV OVAs are alternate-universe what-ifs to take after their seasons. After Story's episode count includes an extra and a recap around the core twenty-two. No new anime is announced. Start with the 2007 series, since After Story assumes its whole emotional ledger.
