About Dear Brother

Nanako Misonoo enters the elite Seiran Academy and writes letters to a teacher she calls Big Brother, narrating her first year. Her admiration for the senior Saint Juste draws her into the Sorority's politics, while her friendship with Tomoko and Mariko grounds the school drama. Director Osamu Dezaki stages it all with his signature freeze frames and floral overlays.

The story turns on obsession, class cruelty, and loss, ending as one of the darkest mainstream shoujo series of its era. The letters frame keeps Nanako's voice central even as the focus widens to the seniors' tragedies. Watch in broadcast order, since revelations about each girl land in sequence with payoff in the finale.

Good to know

The tone is intense from the start, with stalking, self-harm, and death treated directly, so viewers should expect melodrama rather than a gentle school story. Riyoko Ikeda's manga is shorter and differs in places, making the anime the fuller version. Its reputation as a shoujo landmark rests on the complete run, so single episodes out of order lose the letter-driven build.
