About Fushigi Yugi
Fushigi Yugi adapts Yuu Watase's manga about Miaka and Yui pulled into the Universe of the Four Gods book. The TV series aired 52 episodes from 1995 to 1996 covering the Suzaku gathering and the Nakago war. The first OVA (1996, 3 episodes) continues the Tasuki bandit thread, the second (1997, 6 episodes) runs the Seiryu summoning, and Eikoden (2001, 4 episodes) follows the next priestess Mayo.
The manga finished with 18 volumes plus the Genbu Kaiden prequel, which stays unadapted beyond drama CDs. No new anime has been announced, leaving Eikoden as the planned close of the animated book.
Good to know
Watch the TV series first, then the three OVAs in release order, since the Seiryu summoning and the Mayo sequel assume the Suzaku gathering. The first OVA's Tasuki focus works best with his TV arc fresh. Genbu Kaiden reads as a prequel manga for fans wanting the northern priestess story the anime never reached.
