About GeGeGe no Kitaro
GeGeGe no Kitaro is Shigeru Mizuki's yokai boy, remade for every generation since 1968: six TV series across five decades, each retelling Kitaro's battles against rogue yokai with the era's animation. The 2018 sixth series ran nearly 100 episodes and is the modern standard.
Each series reboots continuity, so there is no saga to follow: pick any era and start there. The 2023 film Kitaro Tanjo: Gegege no Nazo is a prequel about Kitaro's parents and fits best after any series has taught you the world. Release order shows the character design evolving from monochrome spookiness to the vivid 2018 look.
Good to know
The series are numbered by fans, not officially, so listings vary: the count runs 1968, 1971, 1985, 1996, 2007 and 2018. Episode counts range from 45 to over 100, and all are episodic, so sampling is fine. The Hakaba Kitaro (2008) late-night series adapts Mizuki's original rental manga with a darker tone and sits outside the family-friendly line. No seventh series had been announced at the last check.
