About Ghost in the Shell
Ghost in the Shell splits into separate continuities that share characters but not timelines. The Mamoru Oshii films, Ghost in the Shell in 1995 and Innocence in 2004, form one movie path. Stand Alone Complex runs its own TV path with seasons in 2002 and 2004 plus Solid State Society in 2006. Arise from 2013 to 2014 is a reboot prequel with its own New Movie in 2015.
SAC_2045 continues the Stand Alone Complex branch on Netflix with seasons in 2020 and 2022, recut as the Sustainable War and Last Human films. Pick one continuity and finish it before starting another, since Motoko's origin and the team's history change each time. Release order across groups is the simplest first path.
Good to know
Do not mix continuities on a first watch. The 1995 film and SAC season 1 both introduce Section 9 but contradict each other, so treat them as alternate starts. Arise assumes nothing and works as its own entry, while SAC_2045 needs the SAC seasons first. The manga by Masamune Shirow sits behind all of them as source material rather than a viewing step. New art and exhibition projects in 2026 have no story episodes attached yet.
