- 2 The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (2009 new episodes) 28-episode 2009 run combined the 2006 episodes chronologically with 14 new ones: Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody, the eight Endless Eight episodes, and the Sighs arc. Returning viewers need only the 14 new episodes.
- 3 The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya 162-minute film released February 6, 2010. Adapts the fourth light novel; the emotional peak of the anime and required viewing.
- 4 The Disappearance of Nagato Yuki-chan 16 episodes (2015). A gentle alternate-universe spinoff set in the Disappearance world, with a human Nagato romancing Kyon. Optional.
About Haruhi Suzumiya
The 2006 Haruhi Suzumiya anime aired its 14 episodes deliberately out of chronological order, scattering the linear story across the broadcast like a puzzle. The 2009 season then folded those episodes into a 28-episode chronological run with 14 new episodes, and the 2010 film Disappearance caps the story.
Recommended path: watch the 2006 broadcast order first, exactly as it aired, then the new 2009 episodes, then the Disappearance film. The broadcast scramble was designed to hook viewers with the strongest episodes early, and it still does that job.
Good to know
A chronological-only first viewing flattens the intended experience and front-loads slower episodes, so prefer broadcast order for 2006. Endless Eight (eight near-identical episodes in 2009) is the famous endurance test: episodes 2, 7 and 8 of that arc carry the plot if you trim. The Disappearance of Nagato Yuki-chan (2015, 16 episodes) is an alternate-universe romcom spinoff, not a remake, and entirely optional. The 2026 20th anniversary project brought a two-week Disappearance revival screening in February 2026; no new Haruhi anime had been announced as of September 2026.
