About FLCL
FLCL starts in 2000 with 6 OVA episodes as Naota meets Haruko with guitar hits and Medical robots in Mabase. Gainax pairs fast cuts with Pillows songs to a closed end. Progressive from 2018 runs 6 episodes with Hidomi, while Alternative from 2018 runs 6 episodes with Kana.
Grunge from 2023 and Shoegaze from 2023 add new casts with Haruko returns. Each sequel resets town and kids, so finishing the original before later runs keeps Haruko tricks straight. No new FLCL run had been dated as of September 2026, which leaves the set paused.
Good to know
Watch the 2000 OVA fully before any sequel at all. Progressive and Alternative spoil Haruko tricks fast and assume the original seen from the start. Grunge and Shoegaze fit last as extras rather than replacements. Treat the original as the canon close, since sequels divide fans and work best as side runs.
