About The Heroic Legend of Arslan

The 1991 OVA adapts the early novels across six episodes with a classic fantasy look, ending before the story resolves. The 2015 television series reboots from the start across 25 episodes, covering the fall of Ecbatana and the gathering of Arslan's companions. Dust Storm Dance continues it in 2016 with eight episodes of sieges and court plots.

The television version is the recommended core, since it starts cleanly and runs further than the OVA. The OVA stays optional viewing for fans of older animation who want the first adaptation. Read order does not matter here: pick one continuity, since the OVA and the series retell the same opening rather than continuing each other.

Good to know

New viewers should start with the 2015 series, which needs no knowledge of the OVA and explains Pars from zero. The OVA compresses hard and stops early, so treat it as a bonus after Dust Storm Dance. Yoshiki Tanaka's novels and Hiromu Arakawa's manga both run past the anime, so the screen story stays unfinished. The manga is the natural next step after Dust Storm Dance.
