About Hunter x Hunter
Gon Freecss leaves Whale Island to pass the Hunter Exam and find his father Ging, gathering Killua, Kurapika and Leorio on the way. Two anime versions exist: Nippon Animation's 1999 run and Madhouse's 2011 remake, and the 2011 version is the one to watch.
The 2011 series runs 148 episodes from 2011 to 2014 and adapts through the Election arc, well past where the 1999 anime stopped. Two films from 2013 are non-canon extras. The manga by Yoshihiro Togashi returned briefly in summer 2026, then went back on hiatus after chapter 420.

There is no separate chronological order worth listing: release order and story order are the same list.
Start with the 2011 series (items 1 to 3). The 1999 version (items 4 to 7) is an alternative, not a prequel: it runs 62 TV episodes plus 30 OVA episodes (8 plus 8 plus 14) that finish Yorknew and cover Greed Island. It paces the early exams more slowly and adds backstory the manga skips, but it never adapts Chimera Ant or the Election arc, so 2011 covers strictly more story with a complete ending.
Both films are non-canon. On the manga: chapters 411 to 420 ran from June to September 2026, and Weekly Shonen Jump issue 41 put the series back on hiatus with no return date. Chapters 421 to 423 are reportedly finished with work underway toward chapter 430.
