About Hunter x Hunter
There are two complete Hunter x Hunter anime covering the same early story. Nippon Animation's 1999 series ran 62 episodes to March 2001 and was finished off by 30 OVA episodes released between 2002 and 2004, which carry it to the end of the Greed Island arc. Madhouse's 2011 series ran 148 episodes from October 2011 to September 2014 and covers everything up to the Chairman Election.
The 2011 series is the one to watch. It is a clean, continuous adaptation that ends at a natural full stop, and its 30 OVA episodes were never given an official English release. Neither version finishes the story, because the manga has not finished it either. After episode 148, continue with the manga at chapter 340, volume 32.
Good to know
The manga is on hiatus again: chapter 420 came out on 6 September 2026 and Shueisha then suspended serialization with no return date, the latest pause in a run of short ten chapter batches since the 2018 restart. No new TV anime has been announced as of September 2026, despite recycled posts claiming one. The 2013 films Phantom Rouge and The Last Mission are original stories set inside the 2011 continuity, so they are optional.
