About Isao Takahata
Isao Takahata features span from Grave of the Fireflies in 1988 through The Tale of the Princess Kaguya in 2013, covering war drama, memory drama, tanuki fantasy, family comedy, and ink washed folklore. Made at Studio Ghibli, Only Yesterday arrived in 1991 with dual timelines in Yamagata, while Pom Poko followed in 1994 with tanuki clans fighting suburban sprawl.
My Neighbors the Yamadas arrived in 1999 in watercolor comic strip form with short family sketches, then Kaguya closed the run in 2013 after years of production with hand drawn line work based on the bamboo cutter tale. Earlier series work on Heidi in 1974 and Anne of Green Gables in 1979 sits outside this list. Watch the five films in release order.
Good to know
These five films are standalone stories with no shared continuity, so release order works as viewing order. Grave of the Fireflies and Kaguya share wartime and moon themes but no plot link, while Only Yesterday, Pom Poko, and Yamadas each reset cast and setting. Kaguya serves as the natural closing film as Takahata final feature before his death in 2018. Start with Grave, Only Yesterday, or Kaguya, then fill the remaining two in release order.
