About Macross
Release order is the recommended path through Macross, from the 1982 Super Dimension Fortress Macross (36 episodes) to Delta's 2021 films. Macross: Do You Remember Love? (1984) retells the TV series and counts in-universe as a movie, so watch it after the series rather than instead of it. Macross II: Lovers Again (1992, six-episode OVA) was made without Studio Nue and sits in a parallel continuity, while Flash Back 2012 (1987) works as an epilogue to the 1984 film.
From there the line runs Macross Plus (four-episode OVA, 1994 to 1995, with a 1995 Movie Edition alternate cut), Macross 7 (49 episodes, 1994 to 1995) with its film, Encore OVAs and Dynamite 7 sequel, the Zero prequel OVAs (2002 to 2004), Frontier (25 episodes, 2008) with two retelling films that split from the TV ending, Delta (26 episodes, 2016) with a compilation film and the Zettai Live sequel, plus a 14-minute Frontier short from 2021. A new Sunrise-animated series held songstress auditions in 2025 but has no date yet. Robotech is a separate American adaptation built from Macross footage, not part of this continuity.
Good to know
Macross Plus and Macross 7 aired in overlapping windows (Plus August 1994 to June 1995; 7 October 1994 to September 1995); the list keeps Plus first since its OVA started earlier. Streaming and disc availability outside Japan shifted after the 2021 Big West and Harmony Gold agreement, so check local listings.
