About Ninja Scroll

Ninja Scroll the film follows swordsman Jubei Kibagami as he is pulled into a Tokugawa plot involving poison, gold and the Eight Devils of Kimon. Kawajiri wrote and directed it at Animate Film, with Kaoru Wada scoring, and Manga Entertainment brought it west in 1995 where it helped define adult anime alongside Akira.

Ninja Scroll the Series aired 13 episodes on WOWOW in 2003 from Madhouse, directed by Tatsuo Sato. It is a standalone sequel where Jubei escorts Shigure the Light Maiden while the Kimon and Hiruko clans hunt the Dragon Stone. The Wachowskis cited the film as a Matrix influence, and Kawajiri later joined the Animatrix.

Good to know

Watch the 1993 film, then the 2003 series. The show works as its own Dragon Stone story but plays on Jubei's legend from the film, so starting with the series spoils the film's reveals. No further anime has been announced, so the film plus 13 episodes form the complete animated set for Jubei fans to date.
