- 3 Rurouni Kenshin: Trust and Betrayal 4-episode OVA, 1999. Prequel about Kenshin's assassin years and the origin of his scar. Watch after episode 62 or after the series.
- 4 Rurouni Kenshin: Reflection 2-episode OVA, December 2001 to March 2002. Anime-original sequel and alternate ending; watch last in this continuity.

About Rurouni Kenshin
Himura Kenshin, a former assassin carrying a reverse-blade sword, wanders Meiji-era Japan protecting the Kamiya dojo. The 1996 series ran 95 episodes to September 1998, adapting the manga through the Kyoto arc (episodes 28 to 62) before switching to anime-original stories.
Release order keeps every reveal in place. Trust and Betrayal (1999) is a prequel covering Kenshin's assassin years, so it lands best watched after the Kyoto arc or after the series. The 2023 Liden Films remake retells the manga faithfully across a 24-episode first season and the 23-episode Kyoto Disturbance second season.
Good to know
Filler flags for the 1996 series: canon covers episodes 1 to 12, 19 to 21, 23 to 24, and 28 to 62. Anime-original stretches include episodes 13 to 18, 22, 25 to 27, and most of 63 to 94, including the Shimabara arc about a Christian sect and the later revenge arcs. Some lists number the show 94 episodes plus an End of Wandering special instead of 95.
Reflection (2001 to 2002) is an anime-original ending that diverges from the manga, so treat it as an alternate close. The New Kyoto Arc (2011 to 2012) is an optional two-part Kyoto retelling told from Misao's view. Remake season 3 was announced in March 2025 with no air date, so it is reported separately rather than listed below.
