About Rurouni Kenshin
Rurouni Kenshin follows Himura Kenshin, a former assassin wandering Meiji Japan with a reverse blade oath not to kill. The 1996 series covers the Tokyo and Kyoto arcs across 95 episodes, Trust and Betrayal shows his youth as Battousai, and Reflection offers an alternate ending. The live action films from 2012 to 2021 retell the same arcs with new staging.
The Liden Films remake from 2023 restarts the story with modern pacing, followed by Kyoto Disturbance in 2024 to 2025. Watch the original or the remake as the main path, not both at once, then take Trust and Betrayal as a prequel once Kenshin past matters.
Good to know
Release order keeps the reveals intact, since Trust and Betrayal assumes you know who Kenshin becomes. New viewers can start with the 2023 remake for tighter pacing or the 1996 series for the full run including original filler. Treat Reflection and the live action films as alternate continuations rather than required sequels. The remake remains the active line, so further seasons may extend the list.
