About Urusei Yatsura
Urusei Yatsura adapts Rumiko Takahashi's manga about Ataru Moroboshi engaged to alien Lum after the tag game. The original aired 195 episodes from 1981 to 1986 plus six films through 1991, closing with The Final Chapter. The remake ran 46 episodes from 2022 to 2024 across two years with the Lum wedding arc included.
The manga finished with 34 volumes, so both anime cover the complete story with different pacing. The remake trims filler heavily while keeping the Tomobiki ensemble, working as the faster telling of the same engagement.
Good to know
New viewers should start with the 2022 remake for the condensed 46-episode path through the whole story across its two years. Then sample the original and its films for the full 1980s run with Beautiful Dreamer as the standout. The remake assumes no prior knowledge, so either starting point stands alone.
