Yoshiyuki Tomino Watch Order

Yoshiyuki Tomino works in order, from Mobile Suit Gundam in 1979 through Ideon, Dunbine and Xabungle to Turn A in 1999. Release order shows how his anti war robot drama grew sharper, with each series standing alone outside Gundam continuity.

About Yoshiyuki Tomino

Yoshiyuki Tomino created the Gundam universe with Mobile Suit Gundam in 1979 and then spent four decades testing how far serious robot stories could go, from the bleak colony fall of Space Runaway Ideon in 1980 through the fantasy mecha of Aura Battler Dunbine in 1983 and Brain Powerd in 1998. His 1980s run also gave Combat Mecha Xabungle in 1982 and Heavy Metal L-Gaim in 1984, each with prickly young leads who argue with every order.

Later works like Turn A Gundam in 1999 revisit the legacy from a new angle, while King Gainer in 2002 keeps the exodus energy. Start with the original Gundam film trilogy, then Ideon, then Dunbine.

Good to know

Release order works because Tomino rarely shares continuity outside Gundam, so Ideon, Dunbine and Xabungle can follow in any sequence after the original. Do not start with Reconguista in G, since its slang and orbital politics assume decades of Gundam literacy. The Gundam compilation films from 1981 replace the 1979 series cleanly, saving roughly twenty episodes.
