About Captain Harlock
Leiji Matsumoto's space pirate debuted in the 42 episode Toei series that ran March 1978 to February 1979, fighting the plant based Mazone. Arcadia of My Youth followed as a July 1982 film retelling Harlock's origin under the Illumidas occupation, and Endless Orbit SSX continued that film across 22 episodes from October 1982 to March 1983.
Three later retellings each stand apart. Harlock Saga ran 6 OVA episodes in 1999 around Wagner's Ring story, Cosmowarrior Zero ran 13 TV episodes in 2001 during the Machine Men war, and The Endless Odyssey ran 13 OVA episodes from December 2002 to December 2003. Shinji Aramaki's 2013 CG film reboots the story again on a 3 billion yen budget.
Good to know
Release order is the recommended path, starting with the 1978 series, since every later version riffs on its crew and ship. Arcadia of My Youth and SSX form one branch, while Harlock Saga, Cosmowarrior Zero, Endless Odyssey and the 2013 film are separate retellings with contradicting continuity by design. No new Harlock anime has been announced.
