Release order. Play the five originals oldest to newest; use Reforged as a stand in for game 1.

  1. 1 Broken Sword: The Shadow of the Templars 1996 · game A bombing in Paris pulls George and Nico into a Templar plot. Start here.
  2. 2 Broken Sword II: The Smoking Mirror 1997 · game A Mayan stone and a drug smuggling ring. Direct follow up with the same leads.
  3. 3 Broken Sword: The Sleeping Dragon 2003 · game George and Nico face a Templar revival with direct character control instead of point and click.
  4. 4 Broken Sword: The Angel of Death 2006 · game A manuscript theft reunites the pair for a Vatican linked conspiracy.
  5. 5 Broken Sword: The Serpent's Curse 2013 · game A stolen painting in Paris leads to a Gnostic gospel hunt. Latest original story.
  6. 6 Broken Sword: Shadow of the Templars Reforged 2024 · game 4K remake of the 1996 original with redrawn art. Play instead of item 1, not after item 5.

About Broken Sword

Broken Sword pairs American tourist George Stobbart with journalist Nico Collard against Templars, cults, and conspiracies. Revolution Software has made every main entry since the 1996 original, mixing globe trotting puzzles with dry humor.

This play order follows release order, which matches story order. Reforged is a 4K remake of the first game, so treat it as a substitute for item 1 rather than a sequel. New players should start with Shadow of the Templars, ideally the Reforged edition.

Good to know

Serpent's Curse was crowdfunded on Kickstarter and released in two episodes (December 2013, April 2014). Reforged launched September 19, 2024 without the 2009 Director's Cut additions. Parzival's Stone, the sixth game, was announced in August 2023 with no release date; Revolution delayed it past 2024 and its Steam page still lists it as To be announced.
