About Colonization
Sid Meier Colonization from 1994 covers European settlement from 1492 to 1850 with Spain, England, France and the Netherlands as playable powers. Brian Reynolds designed it at MicroProse, with later ports to Windows, Amiga and Mac keeping the same loop.
Civilization IV: Colonization arrived September 2008 from Firaxis as a standalone total conversion on the Civ IV engine, needing no base game at all. It resets the window to 1492 to 1792 with 3D maps, updated AI and multiplayer support. No new Colonization has shipped since 2008.
Good to know
Play the 1994 original, then the 2008 remake in that order. The remake reworks founding fathers, borders and native diplomacy enough that tactics do not transfer cleanly between games. Both end at independence, so either teaches the loop alone well. Pick the remake for shorter sessions and the original for DOS era rules purists.
