About Dota 2

Defense of the Ancients launched in 2003 by Eul as a Warcraft 3 mod, with Allstars versions through IceFrog carrying to 2009 with new heroes. Valve hired IceFrog and ran Dota 2 beta from 2011 to 2013 with loot drops. Full launch hit Windows July 9, 2013 with OSX and Linux July 18 and free roster.

Dota 2 runs live service with patches like 7.41 in 2026 and The International each August in Shanghai with Spirit wins. The cartoon Dragons Blood sits outside game order as lore extra. Play Dota 2 now for live heroes, with the mod as history only since servers moved on.

Good to know

Release order is the only path, since the mod feeds directly into Dota 2 hero kits with Blink and Roshan. The mod needs old Warcraft 3 builds and plays as museum with bots. Dota 2 runs free with all heroes unlocked and ranked seasons plus battle passes. The 2026 patches and International cycle keep the meta moving with no sequel dated.
