About Mother (EarthBound)

The Mother trilogy from Shigesato Itoi runs from Mother on the Famicom in 1989 through EarthBound on the Super Nintendo in 1994 to Mother 3 on the Game Boy Advance in 2006. Each follows a psychic kid against the alien Giygas and the Pigmask plots, with modern Americana flavor no other RPG attempts.

Play in release order: Mother, then EarthBound, then Mother 3. The stories are standalone, but the mechanics, jokes and the Giygas throughline build deliberately, and Mother 3's ending hits hardest with series history behind it. Only the middle game officially left Japan for years, which the notes explain.

Good to know

Mother 3 never got an official English release, so Western players use Nintendo's Switch ports for the first two and the fan translation for the third. The trilogy is complete at three games: Itoi has said the story he wanted to tell is told. The Switch Online versions are the easiest legal path to the first two entries.
