About Grand Theft Auto
The 3D era is three PS2 stories that share a world but barely share plots: GTA III (2001), Vice City (2002) and San Andreas (2004). The HD era starts over with GTA IV (2008), whose two episodes run alongside it, then GTA V (2013) and its separate GTA Online mode follow in the same continuity.
Grand Theft Auto VI lands November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, with no PC date announced. It opens a new story with Jason and Lucia rather than continuing GTA V's, and its version of GTA Online is expected a few weeks after the single-player campaign.
Good to know
Rockstar keeps the 2D, 3D and HD games in separate universes: brands and radio stations cross over, characters do not, so Tommy Vercetti and CJ have no path into GTA 6. The 3D games are also told out of timeline order, with Vice City set in 1986 and San Andreas in 1992. Liberty City Stories, Vice City Stories and Chinatown Wars are canon side stories, and The Trilogy: Definitive Edition (2021) is the current way to replay the PS2 three.
