About Mario & Luigi
Mario and Luigi is Nintendo's handheld RPG line: turn-based battles where every attack and dodge runs on timed button presses, plus overworld puzzles built for two brothers. Superstar Saga (2003) set the formula, Bowser's Inside Story (2009) peaked it by putting the adventure inside Bowser, and Dream Team (2013) took it to the dream world.
Release order is the guide, with the two 3DS remakes slotting after their originals as the versions to buy. Paper Jam (2015) crosses over with Paper Mario and divides fans, while Brothership (2024) revived the series on Switch with a new developer after AlphaDream closed. The stories stand alone, so newcomers can start at Superstar Saga or Brothership.
Good to know
The 3DS remakes add a side mode each (Minion Quest, Bowser Jr.'s Journey) that retells the story from the enemy side: play the main game first, then the side mode. Partners in Time's baby mechanics are the series' most divisive, so do not judge the line on it. AlphaDream's 2019 closure made Brothership's existence a surprise; it plays as a soft fresh start. No follow-up to Brothership had been announced at the last check.
