About Metro
This play order follows release order for 4A Games' Metro shooters: Metro 2033 (2010), Metro: Last Light (2013), Metro Exodus (2019) and the VR prequel Metro Awakening (2024). Release order matches story order for Artyom's trilogy, while Awakening rewinds to tell Khan's origin.
New players should start with Metro 2033 Redux, the 2014 remaster that moves the original onto Last Light's engine. Buy the Redux versions of both 2033 and Last Light, then Exodus in its Complete Edition with both story expansions. Exodus has two endings, so the DLC and sequel hooks land harder if you earn the good one.
Good to know
The Redux versions replace the originals and include all DLC, so skip the 2010 and 2013 discs. The Two Colonels (August 2019) and Sam's Story (February 2020) follow Exodus and come in the Complete Edition. Metro Awakening (Vertigo Games, November 7, 2024) needs a VR headset and is optional for the main plot. 4A Games announced Metro 2039 in April 2026 with a February 2027 target; it follows a new protagonist under a faction called the Novoreich.
