About Overwatch
Overwatch launched in 2016 on PC and consoles with a Switch port in 2019. Overwatch 2 entered early access in 2022 as free to play and replaced the first game in October 2022, with full launch in August 2023. The run moved from 6v6 to 5v5 with Push, Flashpoint, Clash and Stadium modes plus battle passes.
Full PvE Hero Mode with talents was scrapped in 2023 for PvP focus, leaving a paid three mission pack in season 6. The game rebranded back to Overwatch in February 2026 with a Reign of Talon story and Switch 2 native in April 2026. Rush mobile was announced in February 2026 with no date. Live seasons continue into 2026.
Good to know
There is only one live client now, since 2 replaced 1, so new players start in the current build. Play the 2016 arc via archives and shorts, then live seasons in order. Treat PvE missions as optional extras after the PvP core. Expect monetization shifts from loot boxes to passes and back, plus hero unlock changes through season 10. Rush mobile stays separate once dated.
